As the energy levels increases, the electrons are located further from the nucleus, so orbitals are bigger.as the value of n increases the size of the ‘s’ orbital also increases. ‘s’ orbitals are present in all principal energy levels. For every value of ‘n’, there is one ‘s’ orbital i.e.Thus s orbital corresponds to spherical shape with the atomic nucleus at its centre. Hence s-orbitals have unique orientation in space. For s-orbital Azimuthal quantum number = 0 and magnetic quantum number m = 0.Thus, electrons have equal probability to occupy any of the degenerate orbitals.ĭegeneracy of p-orbitals remains unaffected in presence of external magnetic field but degeneracy of d and f-orbital is affected by external magnetic field. Orbitals which are located at the same energy level on the energy level diagram are called degenerate orbitals. Total number of orbitals in a main energy shell is equal to n2 (but not more than 16 in any of the main shells of the known elements). All orbitals of the same subshell differ in the direction of their space orientation. All orbitals of the same shell in the presence of magnetic field possess same energy, i.e., they are degenerate.Radial node = 4-0-1 = 3 Characteristics of Orbitals Rest of d orbitals (d xy d yz d xz d x2 – y2) have two nodal plane or points.P x, P y P z, d z orbitals have one nodal plane or point. No s orbital has a nodal plane or a point. The number of nodal planes is equal to the azimuthal quantum number. Nodal Plane: A plane passing through the nucleus on which the probability to find electron is zero is called the nodal plane. Node: There is a region where the probability of finding the electron is zero. Radial node: It is the region between two successive s orbitals. An orbital can accommodate a maximum of 2 electrons with opposite/antiparallel spins.Except the s orbital, the rest are directional in nature.

The probability of finding an electron in an orbital is more than 90%.It represents both the particle and wave nature of an electron. An orbital is a variedly shaped, three dimensional region around the nucleus where the probability of finding electrons are maximum.Īn orbital possesses the following features:
